What is a domain name?
People often confuse domain names with URLs and IP addresses. A domain name is a label or marquee that people use to find points on the internet. A typical example of a domain name is www.facebook.com.
What is an IP address?
An internet protocol address (IP address) is a number that detects a device on a computer network. An IP address is used to move information on the web. Every device connected to the Internet must have an IP address, and it must be unique. A good example of an IP address is 192.159.852.76. Universal resource locator
The universal resource locator (URL) is a set of directions, and it contains very detailed information. If the internet is like a community, the web page would be like a building, and the URL would be the address of the building.
What are they for?
The domain name provides accurate information. This information provided by the domain name allows browsers to locate the web page. The domain name was created to prevent duplicate addresses. As demand for domain name increased rapidly, a new internet protocol version was designed solely to enhance the number of domain names available.
Every device linked to the internet has an IP address. IP addresses are similar to the telephone numbers, car plate, and license. The IP address shows ownership; it allows your device to be located wherever it is. It also allows authorities to track and protect people from their phones, cars, etc., as the need arises.
How does Domain name work?
Domain names provide computer users with short names that are easy to recall. The computer users enter web addresses into the URL field mostly at the top of the browsers’ page. This link (URL) provides direction into the network which results in a page load at the browsers end of a transaction.
The domain naming hierarchies are discussed below:
- .com, .org, .edu, .net, .biz, .museum- there are the top-level domains
- .example-this is a sub- domain
- – it is a sub-domain prefix for the World Wide Web.
Sub-domains are the part of the domain system that is most identifiable to humans.

Domain Name Service (DNS)
Many programs only deal with IP addresses. These programs which already know the IP addresses also determine the network domain name to which the machine is connected. However, such programs must be able to convert the host name into IP addresses. Which begs the question how?
The conversion of host name to IP addresses is done through a service called the DOMAIN NAME SEVICE (DNS).
Instead of individual machines, users or application to keep up with the change in their host names and IP addresses, the name servers (a series of particular DNS server across the world) keeps track of the name or address information for all the computers on the internet.
If you want to determine an IP address from a host name or a host name from an IP address, contact the name server to give you this information.
DNS is regularly used for virtually every activity that involves transferring of information across the network relies on the Domain Name Service.
